U.S. startup EVIO surprised the aviation market by announcing 450 pre-orders for its first hybrid-electric aircraft, the EVIO 810, just moments after the model’s official unveiling.

The aircraft, designed to carry 76 passengers, targets a crucial niche in the regional aviation sector — the 50- to 100-seat segment — which currently lacks new developments and relies on an aging global fleet. Although the customers have not yet been disclosed, the company states that the pre-orders were placed by two major airlines.
The EVIO 810 was conceived as a “strong hybrid” aircraft, capable of operating short flights entirely on battery power and, on longer routes, switching to hybrid mode to reduce fuel consumption and lower operating costs.

The propulsion system is being developed by Pratt & Whitney Canada, using the PT6E as its technological foundation.
The project also receives strategic support from Boeing, which provides engineering expertise and small-scale investment.
Developed from the ground up, the EVIO 810 aims to replace turboprop and regional jet fleets that are nearing the end of their service life. EVIO estimates that, over the next 20 years, airlines will need to renew more than 5,000 aircraft in this category — a multibillion-dollar potential market.
In addition to the commercial version, the company is also evaluating cargo derivatives and military variants, including AWACS platforms, reconnaissance aircraft, and fully autonomous configurations.

The program has attracted support from high-profile industry figures, including former executives from Airbus and Lockheed Martin, further strengthening the initiative’s credibility.
Entry into service for the EVIO 810 is planned for the early 2030s, marking what could become one of the most ambitious ventures in medium-size hybrid-electric aviation.
